Marvel fans have been patiently waiting for Agatha All Along since the series, which spins out of 2021’s WandaVision, was first announced under the title Agatha: House of Harkness. It’s had no less than two other names between that and the final title, Agatha All Along, keeping everyone on their toes when it came to defining just what the show is going to be, as is only befitting a show based around the sneaky witch who pulled the wool over everyone’s eyes in her MCU debut. With the show’s September 2024 debut getting even closer, it seems as if that attitude is going to stay the course all the way up to the finish line.
Speaking on the latest episode of The Official Marvel Podcast, Brad Winderbaum — head of streaming, television and animation at Marvel Studios — hinted that, whatever audiences might be expecting from the upcoming show, they should get ready to be surprised.
“Agatha is — it's really fun, but it's really scary, and it gets quite dramatic,” Winderbaum teases, describing Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness as “an amazing antihero.” Fans, it seems, should expect the unexpected with the series, with the producer teasing that “it lures you in with the fun of Halloween and before you know you're crying. So I'll put it to you that way.”
When asked by interviewer Ellie Pyle to clarify just how scary audiences should expect the series to be, Winderbaum hedges his bets by saying, “it's a Marvel brand of scary,” which might be a little confusing to anyone who remembers the Marvel Spotlight presents Werewolf by Night one-off of a couple years ago. (Was that meant to be scary? Is that what Marvel-brand scary looks like?)
He goes on to say, “It's a Halloween show. There are deadly stakes in this series. It's a fun ride, but it's a dangerous one.”
Well, now we’re curious: is Winderbaum suggesting that not every character who goes into the show will make it out alive? And if so, what does that mean in a series where the supernatural and magical are common place, and the usual rules surrounding these kinds of things don’t apply?
Agatha All Along will debut on Disney+ September 18, 2024.
