Fans are finally about to get Invincible vs Conquest in Season 3 Episode 8 – but if you can’t wait that long, you can spoil it for yourself in the comics.

Last week’s Invincible was – in Robert Kirkman’s own words – one of the “biggest episodes” the show has ever pulled off, near-flawlessly adapting the Invincible War arc.

As the dust settled, the episode ended with the long-awaited debut of a terrifying villain: Conquest (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the Viltrumite soldier Anissa warned Mark about in Season 2. “The only thing I want to do right now… is hit something as hard as I can,” Mark told him, and the fight began.

I’d advise you start with Issue #60, which chronicles the Invincible War with a couple of small differences and leads into #61, ending with Conquest dropping in and telling Mark: “Stand ready for my arrival, worm.”

It also expands the dialogue from Episode 7, with Mark telling Conquest: “Maybe you do not understand. I have caused all the destruction you see around you. The lives lost are the direct result of my actions. I can’t describe the guilt, shame, and most importantly anger that I feel right now.

“All I have thought about, the only thing I’ve wanted since all of this happened, was to hit something as hard as I can.”

It’s also easier than you think to read the Invincible comics for free, so don’t feel the need to splash out on the compendiums straight away.

What happens in the Invincible vs Conquest fight?

In the comics, Invincible appears to kill Conquest after headbutting him to death, having broken his left hand and right arm during the fight.

From the moment they start duking it out in Issue #62, it’s carnage; buildings are toppled, they blow up a warship, and the injuries inflicted on both sides of the melee are grim. As per usual, Mark holds back, so Conquest plays with him like a toy… at first, until Oliver arrives.

“Who the hell are you? I like to know who I’m dismembering,” he tells Oliver, sparking Mark’s rage. It isn’t enough. “Child, if that is all the strength you possess, this is not going to end well for you,” Conquest says.

Elsewhere, Cecil calls on D.A. Sinclair to fast-track up his latest project: turning the dead Invincible variants into ReAnimen. There’s just one problem: their skin is too strong, so it’s taking him longer than expected to get them ready. “Then god help us all,” Cecil says.

In Issue #63, Conquest gets his hands on Oliver again and tries to rip him in half by stretching him so hard that his torso tears open. Again, Mark’s anger helps him power through the pain and save Oliver, giving Cecil time to teleport in and take Oliver to safety.

Eve awakens in hospital and immediately leaps into action to help Mark. As Conquest says, it’s “bad news” for her: he breaks Mark’s leg, leaving Eve to defend herself against him. She tries to contain him in a bubble, but he smashes out of it instantly and stabs his entire arm through her body.

Mark catches her, and she seems to slip away in his arms. “I don’t care how strong you are, I don’t care how fast you are, I can see the future… you don’t live to see tomorrow,” Mark tells him, kicking off the final stage of the fight.

They collide with each other again, just like at the end of Issue #61 – but this time, Mark destroys Conquest’s gauntlet with his fist (crumpling his hand in the process). “Being enraged doesn’t make you stronger, that’s not how it works,” Conquest says, until Mark rips out a piece of his shoulder with his teeth.

On the ground, Eve’s body starts to glow. Just like we saw in the Atom Eve special, she’s able to bypass her mental blockers to heal her injuries and turn herself into a weapon. She fires a blast of pink energy at Conquest that burns him so badly it exposes all of his red flesh. “This time I’ll make sure you’re dead,” Conquest vows.

Mark loses it. Even when Conquest breaks his other hand, Mark keeps him down by headbutting his face to a bloody pulp. Soon, he appears to be dead, and Mark crawls over to Eve. They’re both alive (although he’s in far worse shape). As they lie next to each other, Cecil arrives with a group of superheroes.

We also spoke to Robert Kirkman, who explained why Spawn couldn’t appear in the Invincible War and why there may not be a Rex Splode special anytime soon.
