HBO has finally dropped the official trailer for The Last of Us Season 2, giving fans a chilling glimpse into the next chapter of Joel and Ellie’s journey. After the massive success of Season 1, which faithfully adapted Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed video game, the upcoming season is set to dive into the events of The Last of Us Part II.

Ellie’s Path of Vengeance

The trailer wastes no time setting the tone for what’s to come: a darker, more brutal world where Ellie (Bella Ramsey) takes center stage. We see her training with a bow, covered in blood, and staring into the distance with a burning sense of purpose. Fans of the game will recognize this as the beginning of Ellie’s revenge quest—a journey fueled by tragedy and loss.

Joel (Pedro Pascal) also makes an appearance, but his presence feels ominous. The trailer subtly hints at the heavy emotional weight his actions in Season 1’s finale will carry. The relationship between Joel and Ellie seems strained, with tension brewing beneath the surface.

The Introduction of Abby

One of the biggest reveals in the trailer is our first official look at Abby, played by Beef star Kaitlyn Dever. As one of the most polarizing characters in gaming history, Abby’s introduction will undoubtedly shake up the series. The trailer teases brief glimpses of her strength, determination, and the faction she belongs to—the Washington Liberation Front (WLF).

New Faces and Factions

Aside from Abby, we get a peek at new characters who will play crucial roles this season. The WLF, a militant group at odds with the Seraphites (a religious cult), is featured prominently. Scenes of large-scale battles, new infected variants, and brutal combat suggest that The Last of Us Season 2 won’t shy away from the violence that defined Part II.

We also catch glimpses of Dina (Isabela Merced), Ellie’s love interest, whose role in the season is expected to bring moments of warmth amidst the chaos. Jesse (Young Mazino) also makes an appearance, setting up the complex relationships that will be tested throughout the season.

A More Expansive Storytelling Approach

Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have previously hinted that the story of The Last of Us Part II will be told over multiple seasons, allowing for a deeper exploration of its themes and characters. The trailer reinforces this, showing that Season 2 will take its time unraveling the consequences of Joel’s actions while introducing the morally complex narratives that made Part II so impactful.

Release Date and Hype

While the trailer doesn’t confirm an exact release date, HBO has announced that The Last of Us Season 2 will premiere in 2025. With the trailer now out in the wild, anticipation is at an all-time high.

Fans can expect an emotional, harrowing ride as Ellie’s story unfolds. If Season 1 was about love and survival, Season 2 is about revenge and its cost.
