The future of Bungie and Destiny 2 is changing in a major way, especially when it comes to future updates and expansions to the game.
In a new report from Jason Schreier, Bungie is no longer planning to release “regular paid expansions” for the game. Sales of each expansion have continued to fall year over year, leading to a change in approach. Instead of the larger expansions, Bungie will do more smaller-scale updates. These updates, Schreier said, will be released for free and coming with “overhauls to activities that it hopes will appeal to hardcore players.”
“Other vague plans for the future include a storyline that will feature characters and worlds that Destiny has not yet explored,” the report adds.
As far as another Destiny game, namely Destiny 3, that’s still not in the works. The game is not, nor has it ever, been in development. Instead of a new Destiny, Bungie wants to make Destiny 2 a more attractive game for players.
“Bungie is instead looking to create a smoother onboarding process for Destiny 2, such as a rebranding, to attract new players who might be turned off by a game that can now feel impenetrable to those unfamiliar with its ample proper nouns.”
No Fall Damage reached out Bungie for comment on the report, but that request was not answered. When news broke earlier this week of the mass layoffs happening at Bungie, one bit of information that was also revealed was the state of their game known as “Payback”. Payback was a game in the works at Bungie that many assumed was Destiny 3. However, that’s not the case. In fact, it was a completely different style of game that was just set in the Destiny universe.
In a new report on the layoffs at Bungie and the state of Destiny 2, Jason Schreier says that Payback was a game that was set to “shake up the formula in major ways”.
According to Schreier, Payback was going to be a third-person game that featured characters from the franchise. It would have you explore a “large world while cooperating to battle monsters and solve puzzles.” The game was set to have inspiration and elements from games such as Genshin Impact and Warfare.
Ultimately, Payback was canceled roughly two months ago. One of the reported reasons was to allow Bungie to focus on games that were “more imminent” such as Marathon, which is set to release in 2025.
What do you make of the type of game Payback was shaping up to be from Bungie? What do you think the future holds for Bungie and Destiny 2 after the layoffs and change in how expansions will come?
